Mathetes Bible Study is studying the book Encouraging One Another by Nicole Johnson. Week by week, Bible verses are being read that challenge us to encourage one another just as God encourages each of us. For example, Roman’s 1:12 says, “—that is to be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.” Encouraging each other takes on added significance as we look at these biblical words. We begin to question ways we have been encouraged? And then, how can we encourage someone else? Looking at the changes taking place in our church, it becomes a question for everyone. How can we encourage our new minister? What ways can we ease any discomfort as we all enter in to this new relationship? What is God calling us to do to foster hope and peace in others? What words and actions can we take to help others in our congregation to accept and thrive with change? As a kid, did you play Follow the leader? Or Simon Says? Imagine you are playing that game today. God is the leader. What do we experience that we can emulate and pass on? What other words can take the place of encourage? Perhaps, uplift, inspire, support, buoy up or hearten. Allowing ourselves to receive encouragement is part of the lessons as well. Luci Swindoll says it well—-“I thank God, and I thank that handful of loving folks who know what to say to me and how and when to say it, and for the fact that they do it kindly and in the spirit of grace. If you’ve got friends like that, praise God for them every day of your life. You are rich.”’ Our fellow Christians show us the way to encourage, to inspire. Look to your right, how can you encourage that person? What words or actions can you use? Then look toward your left and allow that person to encourage you. Graciously accept their heartfelt words and love. As Rev. April, her husband Demian, and sons Martin and Andrew begin to spend time with us, it is up to us to encourage and spread Christian love. There is no better time to begin than right now!
