Way Seekers has begun discussing the book Context by Josh Scott during the GIFT hour between worship services, meeting in Room C. The author, a pastor from Nashville, looks at the context for well-known Scripture passages to help us better understand what the writer was saying.
We began with 1 Corinthians 13, the love chapter of the letter from Paul to the Christian community in Corinth. The author noted that this and Paul’s other letters were written to specific audiences and not intended to be included in the Bible, a book that would be read by Christians thousands of years in the future. But the practical advice Paul was giving the Corinthians continues to apply to Christians throughout the world, including us at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island.
His advice in the 13th chapter is to love everyone. Scott calls it “a beautifully articulated vision of who we, and our communities, could be if we allowed love to be our north star. May we all embrace this more excellent way.”
We encourage you to join us in discussing this book. Copies are available in the church office.
As our discussion closed in Way Seekers last Sunday, we read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 together, but we replaced the word “love” with “Trinity.” Here is our challenge:
“Trinity is patient and kind. Trinity is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance.”
