People: My Word for 2024 We meet people in so many ways, and please – I wonder about people when I meet them. I wonder what their lives are like when they are alone, or with their families. I wonder what made them angry at or upset at a stop light or why they are impatient at the grocery store or what has made them happy, courteous, patient, and caring. What is happening in their lives to make them feel the way they feel? I have so many opportunities to learn from the people we meet. I’ve been curious about people since childhood and I believe its because of some people who come into my life, such as my first pastor and Sunday school teacher and my parents. People have inspired me in many areas of my life. I believe that my father has had a huge hand in presenting me with opportunities throughout my life. Numerous handicapped people have come into my life. It began when I was young and I learned that my favorite uncle had been born out on the homestead with no medical help. The umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and he lacked proper oxygen and he was handicapped his whole life. Uncle Louie taught me compassion, a deep love and compassion as much as a desire to help. I believe he prepared me for our daughter, Marjean, and in time, for her lifetime partner Bob, as well as my time with hospice, Stephen Ministry, as mom and friend. Barbara Streisand sang it well – “People who need people are the luckiest people in the world.” I would change the word “luckiest” to “blessed.” Yes I believe my father gave me the need to need people. As you read this, you no doubt will develop your own list of reasons you believe people need people. In short, I believe our church represents Christ helping people through people. – Marge Terman
