The Lent and Easter Season is a time for the deepest of feeling and dedication on the part of Christian people. It is the time when old mistakes, fears, and sins are left behind as we accept the forgiving spirit of Our Father. It is also a time of vision, resolutions, and decisions for personal spiritual growth.
The word Lent had its origin in a word which means “spring.” Although the word is not in the New Testament, it tells us about the feelings the sorrows, and the Saviour before His crucifixion. As Early as 326 A.D., the church set the period of Lent as the forty days, not including Sundays, as a time of preparation for the Easter season. Ash Wednesday was set in the sixth century as opening of this preparatory season.
Hence, Lent should be a time to present the message of Christ in love to those persons not now aware of His concern for all people. Lent should be a time of soul-searching; a time to gain spiritual insight; a time to give up (forever) practices which hinder us in our Christian life and our influence toward others. It is an invitation to walk each day in fellowship with Christ.
