Why Join the United Methodist Church? To start by quoting our Book of Discipline, Faithful membership in the local church is essential for personal growth and for developing a deeper commitment to the will and grace of God. As members involve themselves in private and public prayer, worship, the sacraments, study, Christian action, systematic giving, and holy discipline, they grow in their appreciation of Christ, understanding of God at work in history and the natural order, and an understanding of themselves. (BOD) ¶ 218. Growth in Faithful Discipleship The vows we make when we join include promises to faithfully participate in the life and ministries of our local congregation through our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. In the Methodist Church we understand that the Christian faith was never intended to be a solo journey. The first followers of Jesus came together for teaching, meals, prayers, and more (Acts 2:42). More so, John Wesley was clear that Christianity is a social religion, and that our growth in holiness of heart and life is deeply dependent on being in face-to-face community with others who are watching over us (and we over them) in love. Furthermore, membership is that it is a call to participate as part of a fellowship of followers of Jesus Christ who seek to make the world more like the Kingdom of God.
